Pop!

I was browsing the music files in my laptop, looking for pop songs...

hahaha minsan nakaka-umay na rin ang mga music na trip ko.

Unfortunately, wala talagang purely pop song sa laptop ko. My definition of pop song is hindi mo na kailangang i-subject to discourse analysis ang lyrics, walang social relevance or artistic bent sa paggamit ng words, metaphor, allegories, walang literary device to speak of...and the music is as monotonous as the Selecta chime on those roving ice cream men. That's pop for me, anyway.

When I browsed my music, I made some arbitrary and rough categorization of the hundreds of songs and music I have:

1. 'hippie' songs - 70s songs, guitar solos nga ten minutes kalawig daw gaingus nga kuring ang lead guitar. songs to get high to...hehe

2. new wave - grandfather of house, triphop, trance and music nga may mga beat. usually gloomy, rebellious, and depressing ang lyrics. ang mga sadya usually ara na sa 'new wave collections' or 'can't get enough of the eighties.' artists usually in their late 40s at present.

3. adult contemporary - pop song para sa mga tigulang. simply red, phil collins and mike francis come to mind...

4. new age - music from the realm of myth and legend, soundtrack sang lord of the rings hehehe. The Goddess, Enya, is a prime example...

5. alternative - mga kanta nga ginpamatian ko sang tinedyer pa ko. hahaha difficult to categorize, a fusion of a LOT of genres, kinanglan dyutay lang ang nakakilala para astig...some of them have gone mainstream i.e. (green day, foo fighters), most remained stuck in the 90s, (crash test dummies? belly? no doubt? nirvana?)where they rightfully belong...

6. pinoy rock - a.k.a. 'tunog kalye,' the 'second wave' of pinoy rock; prevalent during the 90s, era ng eraserheads, rivermaya, siakol, yano, etc. basta damu na sila indi ko na sila kilala tanan.

7. techno, electronica - i'm not sure if I can lump them together, since marami rin silang sub-genres. William Orbit, Chicane, Faithless, the Prodigy, Massive Attack, Lamb, Crystal Method, Mono. BTW, may concert dito si Chicane on Sept 29. 1500 ang ticket. Punyeta! I won't even come to the concert if it were 100 pesos kasi sigurado magulo ang mga tao dun...

8. folk songs - songs anchored on the sedate strumming of the acoustic guitar. socially relevant ang lyrics. makes one want to save the world or join a cause...

9. and the 'uncategorizable' (?) songs - basta...songs and artists that appeal to me because of their - uh - uniqueness (read: WEIRDNESS). Bjork is one of them...makes one shake his head in bewilderment...what the f*ck was that song about? hahaha

10. The Smashing Pumpkins - a class of their own, period.

Pero wala talagang POP. Nada. Left them all at the PC back in Bacolod.
