My brother, nephew and myself were singing along to this Fra Lippo Lippi song while we were in the car last Christmas evening. One thing I can say about my family is that music is one tie that binds us together. I dare you to show me another 8-year old who sings Fra Lippo Lippi.

Incidentally, this was the first song played by the band during our high school batch reunion last night. This goes to show how good music transcends generations...

Found my way into Astroplus at SM North and fished out Kate Bush's "Aerial" CD from the bargain stacks. How come I know majority of the artists consigned to "bargain sale limbo"? Kokonti na ba talaga ang mga katulad kong eclectic ang taste sa music? Ano ba yan...

Listening to Kate Bush made me wish I had known her earlier. Her work defies categorization and simple description as the songs feature varied genres and musical styles. Her music is so complex -- within a single song I counted at least three changes in tempo and a song often would cross over into another musical style mid-track. This album deserves to be heard again and again...

My favorite tracks are in the second disc entitled "Sky of Honey": the songs "Somewhere in Between", "Nocturn", and "Aerial" need to be listened to as a series as it features common musical themes and motifs. Birdsong features predominantly within the second disc as well as human voices and animal growls. Kate even utilizes a unique tone and cadence when singing which is reminiscent of the chanting of Muslims in prayer.

This is one weird, amazing album.

Fix You

I just bought an original Coldplay CD for the astounding sum of P100. Sale kasi sa Astroplus kaya ayun hehe.

This,in my opinion, is the best song in the album...



So far, this band is the best musical phenomenon to emerge from this generation. Their "X & Y" album is good. The CD is indeed worth buying as all the tracks are superb. In fairness, may special appearance pa si Brian Eno sa isa nilang track.

I've been looping Prince's "Gold" on my media player for days now. Prince holds the distinction of having penned and sung songs that alternately make you want to hit him in the face or induce such an experience that would make you go down on your knees to worship him.

The guitar solo in "Gold" is a killer. My personal definition of a good guitar solo is if it evokes the image of the entire song - nay, the universe even - in the throes of an intense, mind-blowing orgasm. At almost 8 minutes, the song delivers the goods and the guitar solo is one serious mindfuck. Really. Sayang lang at walang video ng Gold sa youtube...

Here's the once unnamed one giving us a taste of his mean axe-handling. Prince appears at the second half of the song but effectively steals the scene from the old fellows and the guy who looks like the vocalist of Suede. My, that red hat...

From One Starbuck to Another...

Just finished the Season 4 DVD of Battlestar Galactica. Grabe! Truly, one of the most thought-provoking sci-fi series ever made - or remade. This video features the song "All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan but this remake gave me the frakking goosebumps...



Now I'm immersing myself in Herman Melville's Moby Dick. From one Starbuck (Kara Thrace) to another (Captain Ahab's first mate, and I believe the inspiration for the Starbuck of BSG). I'm a bit lost with the whaling terms, but so far I am still afloat and enjoying the ride with Ahab and his crew. The book got me thinking on predestination, free will, salvation and vendetta as a driving force in one's life. hmmmm...

I'm currently consolidating my Kas 205 notes. This should've been done a long time ago but I was still busy enjoying my summer (read: the BUM life). I should complete my notes this weekend.

For those who might think I'm spending way too much time online -- I'm a master of multi-tasking. hehe

I'm now compiling my notes for my Kas 208 term paper and I'm halfway through my Anthro 225 take home exam.

I have been listening to "Cherry Twist" by The Crystal Method since I started typing out my notes. I have the track on loop on my media player since the beat gives my brain a much needed boost. The effect is like an adrenaline rush or a prolonged (think Matrix bullet time) "kick" I get from a shot of tequila. I discovered this Latin American band a long time ago, searching for songs for my Span 10 class. Never got around to featuring them here, thus:

One of the first latin rock bands in Colombia, Los Aterciopelados is one of the Latin American country's top groups. The recipients of Grammy award nominations in 1997 and 1998, the band has fused its own sound by combining a rock-solid approach with a variety of Latin American musical traditions including mariachi, bolero, tropical and flamenco. The last two studio albums, Caribe Atomico and Gozo Poderoso have a definite hip-hop feel to them, whereas earlier albums were influenced more by hard rock and punk. from www.rockero.com

Sampling their songs, I immediately fell in love with the whimsical, fanciful, and slighty-bangag musical creations. Reminds me somewhat of Moonpools and Caterpillars or Belly...

Thanks to 6 units of Spanish, I can now understand about 50% of whatever Spanish text I'm reading. I'm still having a hard time translating song lyrics as I hear them, even spoken Spanish, as Spanish-speakers generally talk like machine guns -- ratatatatatat! hehe
