Mama called up unexpectedly asking how I was doing. Turns out she saw a news report on a certain rally in UP Diliman that seemingly got out of hand.
"I passed by that rally this afternoon!" was my response to her.
I was making my way to the UP Press Bookstore at Balay Kalinaw in order to look at some books and I happened to come across the said rally. Mass demonstrations is nothing extraordinary here in UP but what surprised me was the very visible police presence.
So picture this: me walking nonchalantly through the crowd of protesters, silently praying that nothing untoward happens lest I become a casualty in the melee. And it would be easy to mistake me as one of the tibaks -- I was wearing the UP History Department shirt with cargo pants and sandals. I was like walking bait for the police itching to trounce any wayward tibak.
I was going: "Diyos ko...wag lang sanang magkagulo...paraanin niyo lang ako bago kayo magpatayan...Please lang..."
But my prayers were answered and I made my way through the masses without any incident. Thank goodness the crowd decided to up the ante much, much later.

We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore...

Public school teachers call for Congress to give them the option to refuse service during the elections. read about it
here.
If the electorate can do it, why can't our teachers? Twisted Sister would be so proud...

Breaking News!
Saw the news at the Shopping Center while waiting for some photocopied materials. I just couldn't help myself, so here goes...
MAR ROXAS COMES OUT! -- Mar Roxas is out of the presidential race, giving way to Senator Noynoy Aquino.
MAR ROXAS BUMIGAY! -- Mar Roxas gives way to Noynoy Aquino in the upcoming presidential race...
MAR ROXAS UMAMIN NA! -- na siya ay hindi tatakbo bilang presidente. Siya ngayon ang magiging running-mate ni Noynoy Aquino
The Professional Heckler does a much better job, so here's his blog.

Ang Taray Ni Lola
Nobel Prize-winning scientist turns 100, tells Mussolini to kiss her ass.

"Kiss my ass, Mussolini."
read the article here.
Honored with another scientist for groundbreaking work on the development of cells and organs, Montalcini claimed that her mind is still in superior condition - even more so - than in her youth.
She was literally forced to relocate her work from the laboratory to her bedroom because of Mussolini's anti-Semitic policies. Now she could really say that her best work is done in bed. hehe

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
The GOOD: a firefighter turns into a superhero in Thailand

read about it here
The BAD: ako yung bad. A bad Enya fan. I wandered into Astroplus at The Block SM North and saw a new album by the Goddess...

Please don't look at me like that...
Huwat?! May album na pala siya? Syet, ba't wala akong kaalam-alam?
It was a Christmas album that was released 2008. WTF?
Di bale, next week bilhin ko yan to atone for my transgressions...Forgive me!
The UGLY: eto...si Bayani nagwawala...
Hay naku, sana na setel - este - settle na ang problema...

Random Thoughts
I'm finally completing my 226 term paper and I'm literally swimming through footnotes. Nyetang Chicago Style na 'to!
I imagine historians chatting in some conference about their publications -- talking about footnotes in this scenario would be equivalent to war veterans bragging about their war scars. Like: See note 24 of page 235 of Chapter 2 of my dissertation? naku muntik na akong magkamali ng edition diyan...bumalik pa ako sa archives para ma-check ang accuracy ng source ko!
*sigh*
And speaking of conferences, got wind of belated news that Negros Occidental solons would be jetting off to Macau for a few days of "bonding".
Ehem.
Bonding. In Macau.
Just as long as our honorables spend their own money, that's fine with me. After all what's wrong with a few political and social elites packing off to the gambling capital of Asia to talk about the next course of their political agenda? Nothing smells more like democracy and fine statesmanship than cloistering in a foreign country, away from your constituents, surrounded by vices and all manner of debauchery.
Well...given the global recession, a little spending wouldn't hurt. This excursion would truly inject much needed capital into a fragile Asian economy. Only it's not the Philippines. And the place where they'll be doing their "injecting" is an island where big spenders often come to. Basta! Global Recession! Let's inject some f*cking money where it should be injected! Go!
Anyway, at the very least, they would be returning from the trip "rejuvenated", their minds brimming with plots - este - grand ideas to further improve the lot of their constituents in their respective citys and districts. Win-win scenario di ba?
*sigh*

Sharing -- isn't it a virtue?
Ano ba yan mga brethren...
Monks brawl at Christian holy site. Apparently, a lot of things are still unresolved between the various Christian sects in Jerusalem.
Ang gulo nyo! Mahiya kayo kay Lord!

Karma Police*
Remember my post on the US Marines who threw a puppy off a cliff?
Well, it seems that karma is indeed a bitch. hehe
Marine expelled, another punished over puppy video article from Yahoo News and the Associated Press.
The marines at the center of this fiasco will be reincarnated as bedbugs in their next life, I think. Magiging surot kayo! SUROOOOOOOOOOOT!
BTW, hope you had a meaningful Independence Day...there should've been NO classes and work today para mas maramdaman natin ang freedom hehe.
*pasintabi sa bandang Radiohead

The End is Nigh...
Say goodbye to the old jeepney rates...in less than an hour, the jeepney fare increase takes effect...
It's like New Year is approaching but the feeling is more of dread than anticipation...fireworks, anyone?
Can anybody still remember the time when jeepney fare for students in Bacolod used to be P 1.25? I can. I'm old. hehe
Miss the good old times...leche.

Another One Bites the Dust
Philippine Inquirer website reports on the death of Anakpawis representative Crispin Beltran.
I'm beginning to suspect that Mini-Me has the aid of malevolent powers since it seems that her critics or opponents often fall ill or die. The cirsumstances of Rep. Beltran's death, if you believe in the occult, seems too convenient(or conveniently accidental). Am I starting a conspiracy theory here?
Lintik na powers of sorcery 'to! Goodness gracious...ilabas na ang mga anting-ating, amulets, holy relics, circles of protection and warding charms mga kapatid! Matindi ang kamandag ng pwersa ng kadiliman...
