F*ck the Accents!

My (silent) reaction to my Span prof's reaction to my reaction paper.

"Bakit walang accents dito?"

Hay, goodluck na lang sa mga compañeros de la clase ko. 'Tis too late to drop no matter how disillusioned we are with the subject hehe. Friday may exam pa tayo. Haaaaaay....

WTF?! Why German is SO Bad-Ass...

See...anything said in German comes out angry...especially if it's said in a loud voice...you'd be reciting Shakespearean sonnets and people will think you're screaming bloody murder...

Corroborating evidence to my "German is a bad-ass language" thesis...

...is Rammstein. Nothing further your honor...

BTW, this video just sort-of destroyed one of my childhood memories. Snow White? Why? WHY? OH GOD, WHY?!!!!!!!

...well, the ending would've been better if they strangled Snow-White to death after emerging from her glass coffin. Die Bitch! DIE!

And then they carve up her body with the shards of glass and feast on her flesh.

hahaha. wahahahahaha. WAHAHAHAHAHA-HAAAAAH!HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

*cough cough cough*

*ahem*

God...I should've taken German instead of Spanish...hahaha

Finalmente! y Continuare...

The Kas 226 term paper is done.

I can finally show my face to Dr. Jose next week.

The Kas 208 term paper, on the other hand, is still floating somewhere in the stratosphere.

I'm currently reading on the history of the American Occupation of the Philippines.

Although this is not the usual history that you get from mainstream textbooks.

It's all about postmodern, postcolonial histories. Hardcore deconstruction and structural analysis. Feminist theory, gender relations, culture studies, sexuality. WTF?!

Buti na lang hinaluan ng konting sex hehe para ma-aliw naman tayo ng konti...

O siya, I have to finish (re)reading Vergara and his thesis on the representative aspect of photographs in post/colonial history.

This week: media as agents, actors, and creators of history(ies).

Coming Soon: Archival Research! magbababad na naman tayo sa Microfilms. Ihanda ang Eyemo! hahaha

Kahapon, Ngayon, at Bukas*

Kahapon...

A "day out" with Pebi. Gorged on spaghetti with meatballs the size of ox testicles. Had my first taste of Dairy Queen's Rocky Road. Mmmmmmm. Roamed around SM North's THE Annex (take note: not just any annex, it's THE Annex haha), had fun with the interactive directories and the guest book. Hello, Magellan...

Ngayon...

Q&A in Span class reveals I'm the second eldest in the room (after the Prof, which is a bit depressing), engaged in good-humored heckling and name-calling with the eldest in the room (malissimo! malissimo!)...Cristobal Colon(it's Cristobal not Cristobal). Christopher Columbus. Cristofforo Colombo. Continued reading for term paper...Level 98 G. Master Wizard sa Cabal...ba't pa ba mag-aaditional ng 12 pesos for orange juice sa McDo? Nyeta!

Bukas (or mamaya ng konti)...

Magbabasa pa rin for Kas 208...final tweaking of Kas 226 paper...practice apologizing the Japanese way...

Incidentally, the Japanese way includes a ton of groveling in front of your superiors.

Ayos.

*reference to a play, a sarswela, or a movie based on a play or sarswela. Don't remember...

Random Thoughts

I'm finally completing my 226 term paper and I'm literally swimming through footnotes. Nyetang Chicago Style na 'to!

I imagine historians chatting in some conference about their publications -- talking about footnotes in this scenario would be equivalent to war veterans bragging about their war scars. Like: See note 24 of page 235 of Chapter 2 of my dissertation? naku muntik na akong magkamali ng edition diyan...bumalik pa ako sa archives para ma-check ang accuracy ng source ko!

*sigh*

And speaking of conferences, got wind of belated news that Negros Occidental solons would be jetting off to Macau for a few days of "bonding".

Ehem.

Bonding. In Macau.

Just as long as our honorables spend their own money, that's fine with me. After all what's wrong with a few political and social elites packing off to the gambling capital of Asia to talk about the next course of their political agenda? Nothing smells more like democracy and fine statesmanship than cloistering in a foreign country, away from your constituents, surrounded by vices and all manner of debauchery.

Well...given the global recession, a little spending wouldn't hurt. This excursion would truly inject much needed capital into a fragile Asian economy. Only it's not the Philippines. And the place where they'll be doing their "injecting" is an island where big spenders often come to. Basta! Global Recession! Let's inject some f*cking money where it should be injected! Go!

Anyway, at the very least, they would be returning from the trip "rejuvenated", their minds brimming with plots - este - grand ideas to further improve the lot of their constituents in their respective citys and districts. Win-win scenario di ba?

*sigh*

PUSH

Guess what I did today?

The movie's no Jumper. Which is a good thing. Really.

This tale of runaway psychics in Hongkong reads just like any ordinary sci-fi story. Who hasn't watched movies like X-men, Jumper (hehe), or TV series such as Heroes? A movie review I've read at clickthecity.com said that this movie would pretty much be overwhelmed by the flood of superhero movies that had been unleashed in the past few years.

Push, however, deserves a look despite a few flaws...

30 minutes into the movie, I could feel the movie was pushing for a sequel. What the movie review described as plot holes for me were allusions to backstories that were just waiting in the wings for subsequent release - a sequel, a prequel, a comic - errr...graphic novel series? merchandising anyone?

There's just one plot hole I would like to rant about, though. Spoiler alert! In the sequence in which Nick and Cassie were going over the possibilities they were to encounter if they were to confront the baddies...did Cassie's accuracy rate jump to 100%? I know that wiping the memory of Nick would give the team an advantage over the "Lollipop" watcher, but did Cassie go over all possibilities as Nick was creating his little Easter egg hunt? The scene where Cassie was crying over her fate seemed to contradict the subsequent scene where Lollipop finally confronted her? Did Cassie know that the wiper would be there? Hmmmm...

Kung di nyo gets, watch nyo na ang movie para ma-gets nyo ang reklamo ko. hehe

Anyway, the movie had its redeeming qualities. I liked the interlude sequences wherein the actors would be just strolling around or getting some stuff. These little breaks between the story were well-edited. And the soundtrack is pretty good too. No big name bands or powerballads. Just some smooth electronica to usher things along.

Atsaka ang cute ni Dakota Fanning. Pati na rin si Papa Chris. Aaaaaaay!

All in all, a pretty good film. Finally, I could bury the memory of having watched Jumper deep into my subconscious.

Spoiler: the scene depicted in the movie poster wasn't in the movie. But I think I saw it in the trailer...na confuse tuloy ako. Teka...

Ay, wala pala sa trailer.

OK...this week I shall be cloistered within the library to read for my Kas 208 term paper. Walang iistorbo! hahaha

TOXIC

TOXIC

performed by Britney Spears
parodied by sonofaditch

Baby can’t you see
I’m crawling
Through the paperwork
And all I’m doing
It’s dangerous
I’m failing

There’s no escape
This can’t wait
I need a week
But only got a day
It’s dangerous
I’m freaking

Tonight
I can’t calm down
Losing my sleep’s
The only option now
I feel dizzy now…

All the papers and things
I gotta write
so toxic! I just surrender…
All the facts that I need
To memorize
Things I don’t wanna do but I have to
IT’S TOXIC!

Got to pass or I’m screwed
Oh I know its’ so toxic!

It’s getting late
I’m giving up
I took a sip
From my coffee cup
So slowly, sleep’s taking over me…

Tonight
I can’t sleep now
All my notes
don’t make sense now…
All is hopeless now…

All the deadlines that went
out of my mind
So toxic! Now I surrender!
I’m so dead, and I’m screwed
Now I realize
I don’t know what to do
Oh I know, it’s so toxic

All the papers are due
So today I’m so toxic

I know, I’m so TOXIC!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Prof is gonna
Skin me alive
So toxic! Please! I surrender
Cant recall what I learned
it's out of my mind
I don’t know what to do
Oh I know it’s so toxic

I so tired and I’m through
With this crazy life
So toxic! I’m going bonkers!
Now I pray that I don’t
Get a grade of 5.0
Oh I'm glad I got through
coz this week was so toxic

Can you help me now
Please go kill me now
Exam’s starting now
I’m so not ready now
Detoxify me now
‘cause I can’t take it now
I'm f*cking toxic now...

Now, try putting the song up on the MP3 player or on Youtube...sabay tayo kay Aleng Britney....Go!

Walang Sugat!

Just got back from watching "Walang Sugat" at the UP Theater. Severino Reyes' sarswela, originally staged in 1902, still strikes a chord in the hearts of Filipinos. The challenge for the modern-day retellers of this classic sarswela is how to make the tale relevant to today's audience - which in tonight's case, consisted of a horde of coñotics from the other school that has the letters U and P in its acronym (add na lang kayo ng vowel hehehe)

What made the "historical gap" obvious (at least for me) is the montage of Philippine Revolution pictures which were projected on stage. This in my view was an attempt to cue the audience to the atmosphere of the times when the sarswela was first staged: the Americans were already victorious over the Filipino fighters and were only dealing with the last few vestiges of dissent; the Filipinos, ingenious as ever, shifted the battleground to the stage - employing sarswelas as instruments of protest and continuing dissent. Though the tale centered on a romance and the challenges that confronted the two lovers, the playwright weaved in themes of patriotism, sacrifice and love of country - ideals that were being suppressed by the Kanos during the early 1900 (Flag Law? Sedition Law? Reconcentration? ring any bells?)

Here are my thoughts on the sarswela:

1. Ever since the old days, hit na hit talaga ang loveteam sa mga Pinoy. There were THREE love teams in this sarswela. Love story nga naman oo...

2. I believe that the customary duet between the magsing-irog is a sublime means of alluding to lovemaking, or at the very least, making out. Ngayon all out na...

3. The ending (to which the title alludes to) is a classic plot twist. Despite the programme containing "spoilers", some people of the audience still registered surprise at the twist. I was chuckling at how the actors were giving us cues to the farce, especially the soldiers and the medic.

4. I could just imagine sitting in the audience during 1902 and the Philippine Flag was brought out at the finale...I'm sure people got arrested during those days for displaying the flag, and even applauding it - though I'm not too sure if the Philippine Flag was indeed displayed during the original run. If it were displayed, it would have been a theatrical equivalent to "flipping the bird" at the Yankees. haha in your face! motherf*ckers! a sus caras! hijo de putas!

5. In fairness, the horde from U(vowel)P was well-behaved throughout the sarswela. Pero isang tingin mo lang, alam mo na kaagad na hindi sila taga-UP. Kaya nga may vowel between the U And P eh! ano ba...

6. ang kalaban ng teatro ngayon is interference hehehe

7. Insane movie pitch: let's make a Pinoy version of "Shakespeare in Love". This time the movie will be about the "protest playwrights" and how they managed to stage their plays despite the strict laws during the early 1900s. One scene features a Filipino "informant" leading the authorities to a supposed staging area of a sarswela only to be led to a burlesque show, attended by US soldiers and some dignitaries. Americans turn around to flay the Indio, but the wily Pinoy has evaporated into thin air hahaha naisahan kayo!

8. Now I have to translate all this to español as we are required to submit a reaction paper a clase de Español 11.

Oh, BTW...

Ibon man may layang lumipaaaaaad

kulungin mo at umiiyak...

At May Bago Na Naman...

This week lang po ito. Concentrate na po ako term paper next week. Pramis.

Exhibit Opening

Sa wakas! nagbukas na ang aming eksibit sa Museong Panlungsod ng Pasig. In place of the traditional ribbon-cutting, we had the traditional "palo-palayok" where the honorable congressman from Pasig, Cong. Romulo, gamely participated. It was a curious sight all those nicely dressed matrons and VIPs scrambling to get their hands on the coins that scattered all over the floor after congressman shattered the palayok. oh well...

I'll be uploading pics some other time but all the comments about our exhibit were good. Salamat naman sa Diyos at nasiyahan ang mga taong dumalo sa exhibit. I could honestly say that standing there at the exhibit area, watching the people admire the set-ups and hearing the compliments, I felt an immense sense of pride at what we had accomplished. For the first time, I felt comfortable in my (UP) skin - wearing my black UP shirt with pride. ohhhh...Yuping-Yupi na si Ditch hehe

Those of you in Manila are invited to view our exhibit which will stay until April 30, 2009 at the Pasig City Museum. The museum is the yellow-colored mansion in front of Pasig Church,. Kung makapasok na kayo ng exhibit, hanapin nyo si "Malakas" hehehe

On to other news:

My buying impulse struck again. I bought the "Greatest Hits" collection of Duran Duran from Odyssey Trinoma. Hearing "Ordinary World" and "Come Undone" sealed the deal for me...I'm listening to the CD now and I'm on a "those were the days" mode again. hehehe

And It All Comes Together

we're on the final stretch of our set-up and preparations for the Pasig Exhibit. the grad students and the undergrads finally come together to put together the pieces that would eventually be the UP Exhibit entitled:

"HUBOG SA PUTIK: Etnoarkeolohiya ng Pagpapalayok sa Pasig"

Huwaw.

Now I'm currently wrangling our financial statement and crafting a certificate of appreciation. Originally dapat in Filipino, but since "inosente po ako sa mga ganyang bagay..." - creating a certificate in straight-out-Tagalog, that is - pumayag si Sir Castro na sa English na lang. hehe I just tweaked the words in a sample certificate he sent me and - tadan! may certificate of appreciation na tayo!

Eto Soundtrack of the Day ko...mga lalakeng maninipis ang boses. hehe

1. "Filmstar" by Suede

2. "Tainted Love" by Marilyn Manson. features Robert Hoffman III in a "blink and you'll miss it" appearance.

3. "Ava Adore" by THE SMASHING PUMPKINS. Wohoooooo! Blurred Porn Scene? WTF?! Hindi pala censored! Yahoooo!

4. "Points of Authority" by Linkin Park. I was thinking "In the End" pero parang di applicable in our case. Ang ganda ng exhibit namin, in fairness!

Proof of Life (a continuing series)

We're about to embark on the final stretch of our preparations for the Pasig Exhibit. But enuf about dat muna...eto some of the places in UP where I would usually be found...

Shopping Center. A stone's throw away from my boarding house (if you have a really strong throwing arm). Lahat nandito - eateries, a grocery store, THE DVD SHOP and bookstore, computer shops, photocopying services, pati manicure at pedicure...kumpleto! Note the writing on the pink wall...

Gonzalez Hall. My second home. hehehe

Palma Hall...where all the action is! haha. The AS Steps is considered a historical landmark as many a protest were held in this area.

This is one landmark in UP that I often pass by every morning going to classes. I find this structure strangely arousing for some reason hahaha

AWARD-WINNING!

I am honored to accept this citation from the great BAYENN (bayenn.blogspot.com)

When accepting this auspicious award, you must write a post bragging about it, including the name of the misguided soul who thinks you deserve such acclaim, and link back to said person so everyone knows he or she is real.

Choose a minimum of 7 blogs that you find brilliant in content or design. Or improvise by including bloggers who have no idea who you are because you don’t have 7 friends. Show the 7 random victims’ names and links and leave a harassing comment informing them that they were prized with “Honest Weblog.” Well, there’s no prize, but they can keep the nifty icon. List at least ten honest things about yourself. Then, pass it on!

Now, let there be TRUTH!

1. I am a SON...OF...A...DITCH. Por que? My father is a DITCH from a very BIG family of DITCHES, my mother - though originally not a DITCH - upon marriage to my father has subscribed to the DITCHiness that characterizes all DITCHES. Therefore, my being a DITCH is a foregone fact, being borne of two DITCHES and now a part of a growing clan of DITCHES who are spread not only throughout the Philippines, but also the world. The name's DITCH...SONOFADITCH.

2. ENYA...is...THE GODDESS. Period. Any dissenter shall be decapitated on the spot.

3. I am 26 years of age, single, available, services usually for rent but oftentimes given free. CONSULTING services ha...get your filthy minds off the gutter...mine's staying put, though.

4. I am an Earthling. An Asian. A Southeast Asian. A Filipino. A Western-Visayan. I am a Negrense of Negros Occidental. I am a Bacolodnon. I am a loyal constituent of Purok Kapalaran, Barangay Singcang-Airport. If we were to base ethnicity on geographic location...I am half Manaplan and half Aklanon (Altavasian, parang planet ah...). Which explains slight idiosyncracies in my Hiligaynon. Ay ma-an!

5. I am a UNO-Rian (10 years); LaSallian (4 years); La Salle Yearbook-ian (almost 2 years); G-tech-ian (1 year, I think), a UNO-Rian again (3 years), now I am a proud ISKOLAR NG...BAHAY! hahahaha

6. I am anal-retentive, slightly obsessive-compulsive with sociopathic tendencies; I also am manic (but not depressive); socially intelligent; possessing of an absurd humor built on sarcasm, double-entendres, and toilet humor.

7. I know God is perfect. but in my book, he did one thing right: enabled man to comprehend complex symbologies and see the relationships between sounds, symbols, and actual things, which paved the way for man inventing language and the ability to read and write, thus resulting to increased socialization and communication, resulting to the rise of communities and the division of labor, which led to a more systematized exploitation of resources, one of these resources being natural vegetation, which includes trees, which were made into a variety of things, such as tools, clothing, and paper, paper which was used as a means to render the symbols into a readable and relatively durable medium, which led to more writing, more socialization, more labor division, more natural exploitation, more trees being converted to other things, and more paper, thus paving the way for books, thus resulting to the need to build a library, thus resulting to the need to catalogue and sort the varied information stored in such edifices, which led to developments in education, arts, sciences, literature, culture, thus improving human civilization and ensuring the continuing development of man and his society into the future...did I mention God did one thing right? (I think I erred on the logical sequence somewhere...nevermind.)

8. I AM A TEACHER. And now I am learning to be a Historian. wish me luck...

9. This blog was created out of a need to give my "insane inner voice" a venue for venting. Or else I would be talking to myself all the time...

10. Calea's Carrot Cake is a slice of heaven...or a means for a gustatory orgasm. Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh syeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Now, I shall pass this horror-este-honor pala, on to the following people:

Pebi of pebicentric.blogspot.com
Lenard of holding-on-still.blogspot.com
Pax Florius of whatever-the-heck-his-blog-is-right-now-but-I-saw-that-its-in-friendster-so-what-the-heck-he-still-views-my-blog-anyway-so-most-probably-he'll-see-this

The rules say pass on to seven individuals. F*ck the rules. I'm punk and I'm postmodern. haha
